Abstract

At the request of the Savannah District Corps of Engineers I conducted an archaeological reconnaissance of approximately 4,100 feet of Bay Gall Creek in Warner Robins, Georgia. The exact limits of this reconnaissance were from 2.600 feet downstream of Woodland Drive to loo feet upstream of Corder drive. The assessment area was 200 feet wide. Preliminary inspection of the assessment area disclosed that the creek bed was suffering from extensive erosion of its banks. In addition, the creek was currently dry. These two aspects allowed for a thorough inspection of al l exposed areas of the creek bank. Several stretches of the bank had been modified by the addition of concrete or gravel embankments. The actual field method was to conduct a thorough and detailed inspection of all exposed areas of the land surface within the assessment area.

The above described methods of surface inspection did not disclose any archaeological sites, historic or prehistoric. Consequently, no sites eligible for nomination to the National Register of Historic Places were located.

I feel that the current conditions present in the Bay Gall area preclude the necessity for further archaeological investigations. Standard sub-surface testing methods (i.e. post holes) would not add to our knowledge of the sub -surface conditions. The inspection of the exposed and eroded banks offered a much more complete view of the sub-surface situation than could have been provided by post holes, and they provided no indication of any sites being present.
