Abstract

On 14 November 1978, I was shown the location of the digging by park ranger Bill Jones. Approximately 300 square feet of ground surface had been altered by digging, ranging in depths, where observable, from a few inches to at least ten inches. One pit of about thirty-five square feet opened to a depth of ten inches remains unbackfilled, creating a hazard. Most pits had been backfilled. Two plastic bags of trash, which included beer cans, were left at the digging site.

The present alignment of the pipeline, indicated by the clearing of underbrush across the flood plain, comes near the digging at only one point. I observed no indications that the corridor of the pipeline had been surveyed for archaeological resources.
