Abstract

In October of 2006 an archaeological survey was conducted on the existing Sweetwater Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant (WTP), Douglas County, Georgia, and this is a report of the findings. Sweetwater Creek WTP is located on the Chattahoochee River in the northeast portion of Douglas County (Figures 1 and 2). The plant was constructed in 1986, but rapid population growth in the Atlanta metropolitan area requires the plant to be upgraded. The upgrades include new aeration tanks, secondary clarifiers, an equalization tank tertiary filters, and other improvements (Figure 3). All of the proposed improvements will be constructed within the existing property boundaries, totaling about 52 acres. The primary focus of the archaeological survey was on the area of potential effects, which is defined as the geographic area in which an undertaking may directly or indirectly cause alterations in the character of significant archaeological sites. Secondarily, we also noted the condition of peripheral acreage.
