Abstract

The Brunswick-Altamaha Canal ~as constructed as a transportation canal between the harbor at Brunswick, Georgia and the Altamaha River 12 miles to the north. Construction began in

1836. Today, although parts have been filled and long segments are obstructed by vegetation, the canal remains a striking historic feature of Glynn County. Its straight tangents cut through the flat pinelands, hardwood swamps and estuarine marshes of the southern Georgia coastal plain.

This study is a survey and assessment of the archaeology, history and environmental quality of the canal. A multi-disciplinary approach has been used to produce the study's results .. Field archaeology, literature and archive research, historical geography and landscape architecture have all contributed insights to the description of the canal, its historical development, its significance, and its potential for historic conservation.
