Abstract

In October 2016, Hurricane Matthew displaced traffic signal concrete strain poles and damaged signal heads at four locations at the intersection of State Route (SR) 307 / Dean Forest Road and Product Support Road south of the Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport in Chatham County, Georgia (Figure 1). After the storm, they were replaced with temporary timber poles. Permanent Type IV concrete poles were subsequently installed within 6 feet (2 meters) of the previous pole locations. The emergency repair project also included installing a new signal cabinet, installing new signal heads with backplates with reflective tape, replacing the overhead signal span with advance warning beacon south of the intersection, running new conductor wire for pedestrians and loop detectors aerially across signal spans, and removing the temporary timber poles and the old concrete pole foundations down to 3 feet below grade. The project will take place within existing right-of-way, which varies throughout.
