Abstract

Southern Research, Historic Preservation Consultants, Inc. has conducted a Reconnaissance Level Cultural Resource Survey of the Kings Mill Commerce Park to satisfy GRAD certification requirements in Jefferson County, Georgia (Figures 1 and 2). The study area is bounded on the west by Kings Mill Road; the majority of the study area is on the north side of Campground Road, though a small portion is located south of Campground Road. Rocky Branch and its tributaries flow through the study area.

The reconnaissance survey looked at a sample of locations across 554.14 acres to assess the potential for significant archaeological sites for the entire property. The survey utilized surface examination and shovel test pits to find and evaluate sites. This was not a full coverage survey.

The study area consists of low, broad ridges overlooking Rocky Branch and its floodplain and tributaries. Most of the Area of Potential Effect (APE) is in cotton and peanut cultivation. The uncultivated portions of the project area are typically in low and wet areas and are covered in mixed hardwood and pine forest. One partially collapsed historic house is located within the APE and one occupied historic house is located adjacent to the APE. Surface exposure within the cultivated fields varied from 50 to 75 percent, depending on the size of the crops. General conditions within the APE are depicted in Figures 3 through 6.
