Abstract

"In compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 and amendments thereto, GDOT Project STP - 001 -5 (52) , Bartow County, has been surveyed with respect to archaeological resources , especially those in or eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) .

The purpose of the survey was to locate, identify, and evaluate the significance of any archaeological resources within the projects' corridors.

Project STP - 001 - 5 (52) consists of the construction of turn lanes and slip ramps along US 41/SR 3 from MLJ, Jr. Drive to Main Street. Existing right- of-way is 61 meters (200 feet); minor right -of -way acquisition would be required. Approximately 0.06 hectare (0.15 acre) would be required along Dixie Avenue at Main Street and at Church Street. In addition, a small miter would also be required at MLK, Jr . Drive and Dixie Avenue.

The archaeological survey (Level I) was conducted in accordance with the "Cultural Resource Survey Guidelines" developed by the GDOT Archaeologists in consultation with staff of the Office of Historic Preservation (OHP) and concurred with by the Federal Highway Administration and State Historic

Preservation Officer. These guidelines provide general survey boundaries and methodological approaches to archaeological surveys based on the type/scope of proposed highway projects and are followed during the initial identification of archaeological resources.

No existing or eligible National Register archaeological resources were located within the proposed project' s area of potential environmental effect . It is concluded, therefore, that the project will not affect archaeological resources in or eligible for inclusion in the National Register. "
