Abstract

"In compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 and amendments thereto, projects BRS-0577(13) & BRST-0577(25), Wheeler/Treutlen Counties, has been surveyed with respect to archaeological resources, especially those on or eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). The purpose of the survey was to locate, identify and evaluate the significance of any archaeological resources within the proposed project's area of potential environmental effect.

The proposed project would consist of replacing the SR 46 bridges spanning the Oconee River and the Oconee River Overflow. Previous archaeological survey was completed by Greenhorne and O'Mara, Inc. for the Department of Transportation under the single project BRS-0577(13) in 2000. However, a change in design was developed requiring additional right-of-way from approximately Station 93+ 76.94 to Station 96+50.00 on the eastern side of SR 46. From approximately Station 95+00.00 to Station 98+00.00 along the western side of SR 46 an easement has been changed to permanent right-of-way. An archaeological survey consistent with the project description was conducted for the entire length of the project corridor.
