Abstract

In compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 and amendments thereto, project F-055-2(15), Habersham- Rabun Counties has been surveyed with respect to archaeological resources', especially those on or eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). The purpose of the survey was to locate, identify and evaluate the significance of any archaeological resources within the project corridor.

The archaeological survey was conducted in accordance with “GDOT Archaeological Survey Guidelines developed by the GDOT Staff Archaeologists and agreed upon by the Federal Highway Administration, State Historic Preservation Officer and State Archaeologist. These guidelines outline general survey boundaries and methodological approaches to archaeological surveys of transportation projects, and are followed during the initial identification of archaeological resources.

The proposed project begins at the 20.69 mile post of S.R. 15/ U.S. 441 which is just to the southwest of County Road 385; extends on new location northerly approximately 5,400 feet where the alignment crosses existing S.R. 15/U.S. 441; and continues on a new alignment for approximately 2,800 feet before rejoining the existing S. R. 15/U. s. 441 alignment. The project terminates at the Tallulah River Bridge. The total length of the proposed project is 8,200, or approximately 1.5 miles.
