Abstract

In compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 and amendments thereto, project BR-0001-00(367), Wilkes County has been surveyed with respect to archaeological resources, especially those on or eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP)". The purpose of the survey was to locate, identify and evaluate the significance of any archaeological resources within the proposed project's area of potential environmental effect.

Project BR-0001-00(367) proposes to replace the existing bridge over Upton Creek on SR 47/US 378 in Wilkes County, Georgia. The existing right-of-way varies with a maximum of 200 feet. The required right-of-way varies with a maximum of an additional 10 feet all restricted to the south side of the bridge. In addition, a temporary easement that varies in width with a maximum of 80 feet will be needed on the south side of the bridge so traffic can be maintained while the new bridge is being constructed. The total length of the project is 0.397 mile. An archaeological survey consistent with the proposed project description was conducted along the entire length of the project corridor.
