Abstract

The proposed project would consist of the replacement of GDOT Bridge 299-0013-0 on State Route (SR) 38/United States Highway 84 (Plant Avenue Extension) over the Satilla River in Sunnyside, approximately 2.5 miles northeast of Waycross in Ware and Pierce Counties, Georgia (Figure 1 ). The existing bridge structure is 7 41 feet long and carries five lanes and will be replaced on the existing alignment. The existing right-of-way varies from 120 to 144 feet (36 to 43 meters). The bridge, built in 1923 and widened in 1982, consists of twenty-two (22) spans of Reinforced Concrete Deck Girders (RDCGs) with three (3) intermediate spans of continuous concrete arched RCDG's in the original section and prestressed concrete (PSC) beams in the widened section. The substructure consists of concrete caps with concrete driven piles, concrete pier walls, and concrete columns. The bridge was designed using an H-15 vehicle, which is below current design standards and is currently posted for weight restrictions. Due to the structural integrity of the bridge, the weight restrictions of the bridge structure, and the unknown foundation of the substructure, replacement of this 95-year-old bridge is recommended.
