Abstract

In compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 and amendments thereto, project BHF-030-2(36), Wilcox County, has been surveyed with respect to archaeological resources, especially those on or eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). The purpose of the survey was to locate, identify and evaluate the significance of any archaeological resources within the proposed project’s area of potential environmental effect.

The proposed project would consist of the replacement of the bridge on US 280 over the Alapaha River in Wilcox County just west of the city of Pitts, Georgia. The proposed bridge would begin approximately 643ft west of the Alapaha River and would end approximately 535ft east of the Alapaha River. Existing right-of-way is approximately 100ft. Additional required right-of-way would be approximately 16.4ft on each side of US 280. A temporary easement measuring approximately 919ft X 32.8ft would also be required on the south side of US 280 for construction for the temporary detour. An archaeological survey consistent with the project description was conducted along the entire project corridor.
