Abstract

In compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 and amendments thereto, project F-002-1(33), Bacon County, has been surveyed with respect to archaeological resources, especially those on or eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). The purpose of the survey was to locate, identify and evaluate the significance of any archaeological resources within the project corridor. This project calls for the addition of a turning lane on S.R. 4 in Alma from approximately 1 ,000 feet south of S. R. 4 Spur to the existing curb and gutter section, a length of 1/2 mile. No additional right-of-way will be required in this commercialized zone.

Because of the nature of the project, no in-field inspection was made, but USGS maps, county road maps, and aerial photographs were examined. The archaeological survey was conducted in accordance with "GDOT Archaeological Survey Guidelines" developed by the GDOT Staff Archaeologists and agreed upon by the Federal Highway Administration, State Historic Preservation Officer and State Archaeologist. These guidelines outline general survey boundaries and methodological approaches to archaeological surveys of transportation projects, and are followed during the initial identification of archaeological resources. No significant archaeological resources were located within the proposed project corridor as described in paragraph two above. It is concluded, therefore, that the project will have no effect upon archaeological resources on or eligible for inclusion in the NRHP provided that the project conforms to that described above.
