Abstract

In compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 and amendments thereto, project STP- 41-2(46), Effingham County has been surveyed with respect to archaeological resources, especially those on or eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). The purpose of the survey was to locate, identify and evaluate the significance of any archaeological resources within the proposed project's area of potential environmental effect. The proposed project would resurface approximately 7.82 kilometers (4.86 miles) of roadway on S.R. 21 in Effingham County. The project would begin approximately 841 meters (2760 feet) north of C. R. 39 at mile point 22 .4 then continue northerly along S.R. 21 to an end point at the Screven/Effingham County line. All construction is limited to the existing right-of-way on S. R. 21. An archaeological survey consistent with the proposed rights-of-way was conducted for the entire project corridor.
