Abstract

In compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 and amendments thereto, project BHMLB-7000(5), Richmond County has been surveyed with respect to archaeological resources, especially those on or eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). The purpose of the survey was to locate, identify and evaluate the significance of any archaeological resources within the proposed project's area of potential environmental effect. The proposed project would replace the existing bridge structure on Wheeless Road over Rocky Creek in Augusta, Georgia. The proposed project would begin approximately 180 meters (590 feet) south of the existing bridge, and would end at the Wheeless Road/ Old Milledgeville Road intersection for a total proposed project length of approximately 297 meters (975 feet). The existing right-of-way on Wheeless Road is 30.5 meters (100 feet). No additional right-of-way would be required. An archaeological survey consistent with the proposed right-of-way was conducted for the entire project area.
