Project STP-00MS(105), Bartow/Cherokee/Floyd Counties: Proposed Bridge Painting; The subject project consists of the proposed painting of 16 bridges. The project, as part of routine maintenance for these bridges, would clean and re-paint the metal beams. No additional right-of-way would be required and no ground disturbance would be necessary for project implementation. According to 36 CFR 800.2(0), an "undertaking" consists of "any project, activity, or program that can result in changes in the character or use of historic properties, if any such properties are located within the proposed project's area of potential effects." Since the metal beams routinely are painted, their cleaning and re-painting does not have the potential to result in changes to the character or use of these bridges. This activity would not alter the technological or associative significance of a historic bridge, therefore, the subject project does not constitute an undertaking. This finding fulfills the Department's requirements under Section 106.
