Abstract

TerraXplorations, Inc. (TerraX) was contracted by Georgia Transmission Corporation of Tucker, Georgia to conduct an archaeological survey for the proposed Cherokee Trail Substation Site in Cherokee County, Georgia. The Phase I survey was performed on February 28, 2017 by Ethan Gilbert and Jeff Thompson under the supervision of Paul D. Jackson, Principal Investigator. The purpose of this study was to determine if any prehistoric or historic properties exist within the limits of the project area, and if so, to document and assess each based on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) criteria. The lead Federal Agency for this project is the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Rural Utilities Service.

The project area, as identified by Georgia Transmission Corporation, is an approximate 8.0-acre tract located roughly 9 miles north of Marietta, just south of Highway 92, Alabama Road NE. The proposed project will involve the construction of a 115/25 kV substation. The subject property can be found on the 1992 Kennesaw, Georgia USGS 7.5’ series topographic quadrangle (Figure 1). Photographs depicting the present state of the land within the project area are provided (Figures 2-5).
