Abstract

The bridge on SR 42 (US 23) over Norfolk Southern Railroad, Structure ID 151-0009-0, was built in 1938 and widened in 1979. This bridge consists of eight (8) spans of steel beams on concrete caps with concrete columns in the approach spans and steel caps with concrete columns in the main spans. The bridge was designed using an H-15 vehicle, which is below current design standards. This bridge is classified as Fracture Critical. The overall condition of this bridge would be classified as fair. The deck is in satisfactory condition. The substructure is in satisfactory condition with cracking. Due to the age of the structure, the fracture critical classification, and the structural integrity of the bridge pertaining to the design vehicle, replacement of this 79-year-old bridge is recommended.
