Abstract

In compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 and amendments thereto, Project EDS-441(16), Oconee County, has been surveyed with respect to archaeological resources, especially those in or eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). The purpose of the survey was to locate, identify, and evaluate the significance of any archaeological resources within the project corridor. This project consists of the construction of a bypass west of Watkinsville and the widening of U.S. 441. The project would begin south of Watkinsville on U.S. 441, just north of C.R. 107, and continue northerly on new location to U.S. 441 near C.R. 274/ S.R. 207/Hog Mountain Road, north of Watkinsville, for a distance of 3.35 miles (5 .39 kilometers). At this point the project would transition to U.S. 441 and continue northerly for approximately 0. 28 miles (0. 45 kilometer). U.S. 441 would be widened on the west side. A tie-in for access to and egress from U.S. 441 would be provided approximately 800 feet south of C.R. 274. A connector for the subdivision which is directly opposite the tie-in, would be also be provided. Existing right-of-way is 250 feet; approximately 130 feet of right-of-way would be required along U.S. 441. The new location section would require 250 feet. An archaeological survey consistent with the proposed project corridor was conducted for the entire length of the project.
