Abstract

Southeastern Archeological Services, Inc. conducted archival/background research and Phase I intensive archeological survey for a proposed new development on a ca. 39-acre area on a portion of the University of Georgia (UGA) Gardens tract. The tract is located on the western side of South Milledge Avenue, near its intersection with Whitehall Road in Clarke County, Georgia (Figure 1). The tract will be used to construct improvements for the UGArdens facility. Plans for the layout of the proposed improvements have not been finalized, and the results of this archeological survey will be factored into final design decisions. The project area that was archeologically surveyed is the maximum extent of the proposed undertaking. The tract was archeologically surveyed by SAS senior field archeologist Ron Schoettmer on December 6, 7, and 12, 2018, following archival research into the historic period development of the tract.
