Abstract

In compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 and amendments thereto, projects FR-002-1(43) & (46), Ware County has been surveyed with respect to archaeological resources, especially those on or eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). The purpose of the survey was to locate, identify and evaluate the significance of any archaeological resources within the project corridor. The proposed projects would widen State Street/S.R. 4/U.S. 1/U.S. 23 in Waycross beginning at Clough Street and proceeding northwesterly to a point 1000 feet northwest of the intersection with C.R. 465. The existing right-of-way is 60 feet with approximately 150 feet of right-of-way required for the proposed projects. The proposed projects would be 2.42 miles in length. A survey consistent with the proposed rights-of-way was surveyed for the entire length of the project. An archaeological survey (Level I) was conducted in accordance with "GDOT Archaeological Survey Guidelines" developed by the GDOT Staff Archaeologists in consultation with DNR Historic Preservation Section Staff and concurred in by the Federal Highway Administration and State Historic Preservation Officer. These guidelines provide general survey boundaries and methodological approaches to archaeological surveys based on the type/scope of proposed highway projects and are followed during the initial identification of archaeological resources.
