Abstract

In compliance with Section l 06 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 and amendments thereto, project STP-022-1(26), Spalding and Butts Counties, has been surveyed with respect to archaeological resources, especially those on or eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). The purpose of the survey was to locate, identify and evaluate the significance of any archaeological resources within the proposed project's area of potential environmental effect. The proposed project would widen and reconstruct SR 16. The project was originally surveyed by Southeastern Archeological Services (SAS) in 1999 ("An Archeological Survey of Proposed Improvements to S.R. 16 (The Arthur Bolton Parkway), Spalding and Butts Counties, Georgia"; HP#: HP990623-004) and reassessed by GDOT archaeologist Paul McIntosh in 2002. Current revisions require realignment of the SR 16/Rehoboth Road intersection. Rehoboth Road would be realigned on new location immediately to the east of the existing intersection. Required right-of-way varies between approximately 60 to 150 feet. An archaeological survey consistent with the project description was conducted for the entire length of the project corridor.
