Abstract

In compliance with Section 106 of the National NH-00 1-4(62) in Spalding County has been surveyed with respect to archaeological resources, especially those on or eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). The purpose of the survey was to locate, identify and evaluate the significance of any archaeological resources within the proposed project's area of potential environmental effect. Proposed project NH-001-4(62) in Spalding County proposes to improve the intersection of SR 16 and SRJ/US 19 just west of Griffin. The project would construct left tum lanes on SR 16 for eastbound and westbound vehicles. The project will include the widening of SR 16 to provide turn lanes for vehicles exiting onto SR 3/US 19 and Carver Road. The existing three lane SR 16 would be overlaid and stripped to provide four lanes, and the existing 4 lane bridge over SR 3/US 19 would be widened. The existing right-of-way is 300 feet and an additional 10 to 20 feet of right-of-way would be required in three quadrants of the intersection for the construction of this project. An archaeological survey (Level II) was conducted in accordance with "GDOT/FHWA Cultural Resource Survey Guidelines" developed by the GDOT Staff Archaeologists in consultation with DNR Historic Preservation Division Staff and concurred in by the Federal Highway Administration and State Historic Preservation Officer. These guidelines provide general survey boundaries and methodological approaches to archaeological surveys based on the type/scope of work of proposed highway projects and are followed during the initial identification of archaeological resources.
