Abstract

In compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 and amendments thereto, GDOT Project FLF-540(1) and (4), Bibb-Jones-Twiggs Counties, has been surveyed with respect to archaeological resources, especially those on or eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). The purpose of the survey was to locate, identify, and evaluate the significance of any archaeological resources within the project corridor. The proposed project consists of widening and reconstructing of State Route 57 beginning at the SR 57 and us 80 intersection in Bibb County and continuing east through Jones and Twiggs Counties to the Twiggs/Wilkinson County line. The existing right-of-way varies from 80 feet in Bibb County to 100 feet in Jones and Twiggs Counties. The required right-of-way would be 90 feet from US 80 to CR 271. From CR 271 to CR 20 in Twiggs County, the widening would occur on the north side and require 190 feet of right-of-way; from CR 20 to CR 198, the widening would shift to the south side and require 200 feet of right-of-way; from CR 198 to the Twiggs/Wilkinson County line, the widening would occur on the north side and require a minimum 200 feet of right-of-way. The total project length is approximately 9.8 miles.
