Abstract

In compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 and amendments thereto, projects IM-00MS (149) /NH-0OMS (156), Bibb, Muscogee, Meriwether, Coweta, Monroe, Peach, Houston, Dooly, and Spalding Counties have been surveyed with respect to archaeological resources, especially those on or eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). The purpose of the survey was to locate, identify and evaluate the significance of any archaeological resources within the proposed projects area of potential environmental effect. The proposed projects would replace/ repair existing guardrail throughout nine counties in Georgia. The proposed pro jects include the following: guardrail replacement and repair on I-85, I-185, and at two locations on Fort Benning in Coweta, Meriwether, and Muscogee Counties; guardrail replacement and repair on US 19/SR 3 in Spalding County; guardrail replacement and repair on I - 75 in Bibb, Peach, Houston, and Dooly Counties; and guardrail replacement and repair on I-75, I-475, and various Georgia State Routes in Monroe County and within the Macon city limits. All project construction will be restricted to within the existing right-of-way on roadways identified above. An archaeological survey consistent with the proposed project descriptions was conducted for the entire length of both project corridors.
