Abstract

In compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, Georgia Department of Transportation Project APD-056-2(2) was surveyed with respect to archaeological resources; especially those which may be eligible for inclusion in the NRHP. Archaeological surveys, both reconnaissance and intensive, consisted of examination of State site files, relevant literature, maps and aerial photography, in addition to field survey. Field survey consisted of random firerake testing, shovel testing, and surface inspection.

These surveys led to the identification and evaluation of 17 archaeological sites. With this in mind, it is the opinion of the Georgia Department of Transportation Staff Archaeologist that if construction of the Ridge Route is undertaken, no sites on or eligible for inclusion on the NRHP will be affected. However, if the State Route 5 Route is chosen additional studies must be made.
