Abstract

The proposed project is an intersection improvement that would construct a single lane roundabout at the Monroe Drive and Armour Drive intersection in the city of Atlanta, Fulton County, Georgia. Armour Drive’s southbound approach would feature an 8-foot (2.4-meters) right turn lane and a 10-foot (3-meters) shared through lane and left turn lane. Monroe Drive’s westbound approach would feature a 10-foot (3-meters) shared right turn lane and through lane, while Monroe Drive’s eastbound approach would feature a 12-foot (3.7-meters) shared left turn lane and through lane. A raised 5-foot (1.5-meter) crosswalk would be constructed at all approaches to the roundabout.

Armour Drive is currently a two-lane road with left and right turn lanes, curb and gutter, and sidewalk that has southbound exit and entrance ramps for State Route (SR) 13 South/Buford Spring Connector. Monroe Drive, east of the Armour Drive intersection, is a two-lane roadway with a left turn only lane, curb and gutter, and sidewalk on the south side of the street. At the westbound approach to Armour Drive, Monroe Drive becomes a four-lane road with a through lane and a separate right-turn lane. Immediately north of the intersection is the overpass for the SR 13 South/Buford Spring connector and Interstate (I) 85.

The right-of-way (ROW) associated with the proposed project is located within the existing ROW for Monroe Drive, SR 13/Buford Spring connector and I-85/SR 403. The total width of the combined ROW varies from approximately 375 feet (114 meters) to 450 feet (137 meters). The ROW associated with Armour Drive is also located within the 450-foot (137-meter) wide ROW area. Minimal proposed ROW may be required south of the existing ROW of Monroe Drive; however, the exact width of that ROW is yet to be determined, and is assumed to be within the ESB boundary.
