Abstract

Individually eligible for the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP), Riverside Plantation pre-dates the creation of Fort Benning Military Reservation. Acquired from Arthur Bussey in 1919, Riverside has continually served as the residence for the installation’s Commanding General. Individually eligible, Riverside was listed in the NRHP in 1971. As a designated historic property, recently proposed alterations and rehabilitation projects removing original historic elements/features from the building led Fort Benning to pro-actively pursue a Historic American Buildings Survey (HABS) recordation of the Plantation complex that includes the residence, garage/storage building, and its grounds. In the midst of the HABS project, Riverside was privatized, under the Residential Community Initiative (RCI), along with all of the installation’s historic housing units that are maintained by Clark-Pinnacle. As the process of privatization went forward, it was decided to complete this project after undertaking the larger task of mitigating/documenting each type of Fort Benning’s historic housing units under a separate HABS project. Typical to the excellent stewardship by Fort Benning and its partners, no maintenance projects have affected Riverside’s integrity. This documentation and large format photographs fulfill the necessary recordation requirements. Upon review and approval by the Southeast Regional Office of the National Park Service (NPS), the documentation received HABS No. GA ###. The HABS documents and large format photographs are on file at the NPS and the Georgia State Historic Preservation Office (GA SHPO) in Atlanta with copies available at Fort Benning’s cultural resource office and Donovan Technical Library.
