Abstract

The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) has identified the need for converting the Interstate 20 (I-20) at Waco Road ramp terminals from stop-controlled intersections to single-lane roundabouts.

The interchange of I-20 at Waco Road is a diamond interchange. I-20 is a four-lane divided highway that runs east/west and is classified as an urban interstate principal arterial. The northern ramp terminal consists of I-20’s westbound entrance and exit ramps. The south ramp terminal consists of I-20’s eastbound exit and entrance ramps. The exit and entrance ramp lane widths vary between 4.3 to 4.9 meters (m) (14 to 16 feet [ft]). The existing right-of-way (ROW) on I-20 is approximately 400 ft. Waco Road is classified as a rural major collector and consists of two, 3.7-m (12-ft) wide through lanes (one in each direction) and a designated right-turn lane from southbound Waco Road to the I-20 westbound entrance ramp. The existing ROW on Waco Road is approximately 61 m (200 ft) wide. The proposed roundabouts would have an inscribed diameter of approximately 50 m (164 ft) and would each contain a single 6.1 m (20-ft) wide travel lane. All work for the proposed project would be entirely constructed within the existing ROW.
