Abstract

A cultural resources survey has been completed on 908 acres for the Cooper Creek Watershed Project. The project includes activities to: (1) restore native plant communities, (2) enhance wildlife habitat conditions, and (3) improve forest health in the Cooper Creek, Coosa Creek, and Youngcane Creek watersheds in Union County, Georgia. This work was carried out by the Chattahoochee-Oconee Zone Archeologist from late summer of 2014 through 2016 and documented 39 archaeological sites and no historic structures (Table 1). These sites include 30 pre-contact occupations, six Euro-American occupations, and three with both pre-contact and Euro-American occupations. Of these 39 sites, ten (9UN466, 9UN677, 9UN680, 9UN687, 9UN698, 9UN702, 9UN703, 9UN704, 9UN705, 9UN706) are considered to have an undetermined status for listing on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) with 29 are considered to be not eligible for the NRHP. Eight isolated finds were also recorded and these are not eligible for the NRHP. Those sites with an undetermined NRHP status will be protected from project related activities.
