Abstract

Original 2016 Project Description: The proposed project would consist of the construction of a 10-foot to 12-foot multi-use trail connecting Peachtree Industrial Boulevard (PIB) to Suwanee Creek Park (Figures 1 and 2). The proposed project consists of two segments. The first segment (PIB trail), would begin 700 meters (2,300 feet) west of Rogers Bridge Road and extend north, ending at McGinnis Ferry Road. The section along PIB would be along existing right-of-way (ROW), which would vary between 200 feet and 370 feet (700 meters to 1,210 meters). The second segment (Spur trail), would connect PIB to Suwanee Creek Park, following an existing sewer line easement that parallels Suwanee Creek to the Suwanee Creek Park on the east side of Buford Highway. The segment would begin approximately 100 meters (330 feet) south of Riverglen Circle, on the south side of PIB before turning to the east, following the existing sewer line easement. A portion of the Spur trail prior to encountering the Norfolk Southern Railroad would proceed northeast along a powerline easement to Station Center Boulevard. The proposed ROW for the Spur Tail would vary between 20 feet and 55 feet (7 to 14 meters).  This original project was surveyed in 2016 and two bridge ruin sites, 9GW670 and 9GW671, were identified along the Spur Trail (Koch and Renaud 2017).  July 2017 Project Changes: After SHPO concurrence in January 2017, updated plans dating to July 2017 added two easements on the north side of PIB which extended beyond the limits of previous archaeological survey coverage. The first easement, located directly north of Noblin Ridge Drive, is approximately 117 meters (385 feet) in length and 45 meters (150 feet) in width. The second easement, 90 meters (300 feet) south of Riverglen Circle, is approximately 75 meters (245 feet) in length and 40 meters (137 feet) wide. Fieldwork for these additions to the plans was performed in November 2017 (Figures 3M and 3N).  February 2018 Project Changes: In February of 2018, design plans were further refined eliminating the Spur trail connecting PIB to Suwanee Creek Park and eliminating the easement south of Riverglen Circle. The easement directly north of Noblin Ridge Drive was reduced in length from 117 meters (385 feet) to 55 meters (180 feet) and the easement located south of Riverglen Circle was removed. Two areas consisting of roughly 40 meters (132 feet) at the western end of the project and 26 meters (86 feet) at the northeastern end, which were not covered by the 2016 survey, were identified and surveyed. Fieldwork addressing these areas was completed in March of 2018 (Figures 3A and 3U).  This addendum short form addresses changes to the overall project design since the Original 2016 archaeological survey.
