Abstract

SEARCH conducted a Phase I archaeological survey of 163 ha (402 ac) at the Townsend Bombing Range (TBR) in Long County, Georgia, from 5 August to 7 November, 2019. This project was completed on behalf of Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) Southeast under Contract No. N62470-12-D-0078, Delivery Order No. N6945017F0327, and was conducted in partial fulfillment of the Navy’s responsibilities under Section 110 of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) of 1966, as amended. Section 110 directs federal agencies to assume responsibility for the preservation of historic properties under their ownership or control. A total of 1,202 shovel tests were excavated, of which two contained cultural material. The shovel tests were placed at 30 m (98 ft) and 90 m (295 ft) intervals within zones of high and low archaeological probability, respectively, and at 10 m (33 ft) intervals to delineate positive shovel tests. Site 9LG704 was recorded as a result of the survey. The site is composed of two positives shovel tests and two small surface scatters, yielding a total of 11 lithic artifacts. No evidence of cultural features or diagnostic artifacts was observed at the site. Based on a lack of research value, Site 9LG704 is recommended not eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). Furthermore, no structures were observed within the survey area. No further cultural resource investigations are recommended for the survey area.
