Georgia Transmission Corporation wishes to construct a 115/25 kV substation on a 3.8 ha (9.47 ac) tract of cultivated land just outside of Sylvester, in central Worth County. Southeastern Archeological Services was contracted to conduct a Phase I archeological survey of the tract, the purpose of which was to locate and evaluate the significance of any archeological sites and that might be affected by the construction and maintenance of the substation. Intensive surface inspection of the plowed, fallow field and the excavation of 18 shovel tests led to the discovery and documentation of two archeological sites. Site 9WO74 is the highly disturbed remains of a small, early twentieth century house and 9WO75 is a sparse scatter of twentieth century artifacts.
It is the recommendation of the principal investigator that neither site meets the criteria of eligibility to the National Register of Historic Places and that no further work needs to be conducted at any of them. It is the recommendation of the principal investigator that no significant (potentially eligible) archeological resources will be impacted by the proposed substation and that the project should be granted clearance to proceed.
