Abstract

Southeastern Archaeological Services, Inc. (SAS) conducted archival/background research and an archaeological field survey of an approximate 9-acre (3.6-ha) parcel of land owned by the University of Georgia that abuts the Georgia Seed Development Commission facility on the northeast edge of Plains in central Sumter County, Georgia. The University is considering conveying this parcel to the GSDC and wants to ensure that no significant archaeological sites are present on the parcel. The project’s area of potential effect was the entire 9-acre parcel, even though much of the northern lobe of the parcel that fronts on US highway 280 has an existing building and current grading for a second building. The majority of the main, southern block of the parcel, the eastern three-quarters, was in a well-washed plowed field that afforded excellent surface visibility conditions for seeing artifacts. Archival research was conducted by the author prior to fieldwork and the field survey was conducted by the author on April 29, 2020.
