Abstract

Southeastern Archaeological Services, Inc. completed a reconnaissance level archeological survey of an approximately 220 ac. parcel of land located in southwestern Elbert County, on State Route 72 near the community of Oglesby. We conducted the fieldwork on November 30 and December 1, 2009. This letter report, with an attached map, serves as our report of findings. The field survey \Vas preceded by archival and background research. The Georgia Archaeological Site Files showed that no sites had previously been recorded in or close to the project area. The two closest sites, 9EB2 and 9EB3, are on either side of East Dove Creek a few hundred yards to the 1101thwest of the project area. Both sites were recorded in the 1930s by archeologist Robert Wauchope during his survey of n01th Georgia. These are prehistoric occupation sites, but little is known about them. In conclusion, we found that the tract contains an average number and variety of archeological sites. We predict that Southeastern Archeological Services' average site density for Piedmont Georgia, which is about one site per 15 acres, will hold for this tract, resulting in a predicted 15 sites for the 220-ac tract. We believe the Deadwyler family cemetery (FS 2) is clearly eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places and should be avoided and protected from any disturbance or encroachment. Our reconnaissance survey has clearly shown that the track contains enough cultural resources to warrant a full Phase I archeological survey. With the completion of the Phase I survey, we could assess each site as not eligible, eligible or potentially eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places.
