Abstract

In early 2001, Southeastern Archeological Services, Inc. (SAS) conducted a Phase I intensive archeological survey for the proposed replacement of the Amelia Road bridge over the Towaliga River in Spalding County, Georgia. In addition to the bridge replacement, a portion of Amelia Road will be realigned to straighten a curve in the road. The existing road follows natural contours and grade, whereas the realigned portion of the road will utilize two ridges that approach the river. Total length of the project is about 1200 m (4000 ft) and the proposed new right-of-way is 23 m (75 ft) wide.

The survey located three archeological sites within or close to the proposed new right-of-way, none of which are considered to be significant resources. Because they are not eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places, construction is not considered to be an adverse effect. Therefore, we recommend that the project be allowed to proceed.
