Abstract

The Good Group contracted with Southeastern Archeological Services, Inc. to conduct a due diligence study of a ca. 150 ac. tract in southern Forsyth County that is slated for mixed-use development. The tract is bounded by SR 400 to the north, Union Hill Road to the west, an unnamed branch of Big Creek to the east, and existing development to the south (see attached map of project area). This tract today is largely undeveloped and undisturbed and was known to contain a cemetery (the James Cemetery) and possibly two houses or farmsteads older than 50 years. The goal of our study was to learn about and locate any potentially significant cultural resources on the tract that could affect the development of the tract. To accomplish this, we searched existing data bases of historic and cultural resources, spoke with the current tenant and former owner of the tract, spoke with the local historic society, and conducted a field reconnaissance of the property. Torn Gresham conducted the archival/data base searches from July 6 through July12, 2006 and Chad Braley conducted the field reconnaissance and interview with the former land owner on July 7, 2006. This report with attached figures presents the results of our study.
