Abstract

Pickett's Mill Historic Site is located in Paulding County, Georgia, approximately 26 miles northwest of Atlanta. The site consists of 880 acres, which includes most of the area of the Battle of Pickett's Mill, May 27, 1864, and associated military actions of May 26-31, 1864. The area is being developed as an interpretive park by the Parks, Recreation, and Historic Sites Division of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources. The purpose of this report is to provide an overview of cultural resources on the state-owned property, and to describe in detail archaeological investigations conducted at the Zachariah Brand House, a small farmstead which stood in the area of the military activities. The work at Pickett's Mill was carried out in two phases. An archaeological-historical survey of the property was made in the fall of 1973, and excavations at the Brand House site were conducted in the fall and winter of 1977-78. Both phases were implemented under an agreement between the Department of Anthropology at Georgia State University and the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, with Roy S. Dickens, Jr. serving as Principal Investigator.
