Abstract

The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) wishes to widen a portion of State Bridge Road in northern Fulton County. During the course of planning and designing for this project, Jessica Lavandier, director of the Fulton County Environment and Community Development Department, brought to the attention of GDOT an abandoned cemetery on State Bridge Road that she identified as Number 37, the Langley Family Cemetery. She identified it as occurring on the southwest side of the road adjacent to the west entrance to State Bridge Crossing Elementary School (Figure 1). It appears that this cemetery cannot be avoided by the project, so GDOT wishes to have it moved in accordance with the permitting procedures outlined in Georgia's Abandoned Cemeteries Act, OCGA 36-72. In this case the permit to move the cemetery would be granted by the Superior Court with jurisdiction. The permit application must contain five items, one of which (item 2) is II a report prepared by an archeologist stating the number of graves believed to be present and their locations as can be determined from the use of minimally invasive investigation techniques. This document is the report of those investigations.
