Abstract

Southern Research, Historic Preservation Consultants, Inc. has completed a cultural resources survey of the proposed 1,912-acre Willis Knob Project in the Chattooga River Ranger District of the Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forests in Rabun County, Georgia. The goal of this cultural resources survey was to identify all potentially significant archaeological and historical resources within the project area and to evaluate the eligibility of the identified resources for inclusion on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP).

Fieldwork for this project was conducted intermittently from November 14, 2018 to March 22, 2019. No extant structures are located anywhere within the current project area. During the cultural resources survey, we revisited two previously recorded sites (9RA355 and 9RA401), identified 29 new sites, and identified seven isolated finds.

As a result of final analysis, one site (9RA469) is recommended eligible for listing on the NRHP and nine sites are recommended undetermined for listing on the NRHP (9RA401, 9RA463, 9RA470, 9RA471, 9RA477, 9RA478, 9RA480, 9RA481, and 9RA482). The remaining sites are recommended not eligible for listing on the NRHP.
