Abstract

The proposed Truman Linear Park Phase II project includes the construction of a multi-use trail as part of the Coastal Georgia Greenway from the end of the Phase I path located at 52nd Street and Bee Road traveling south to its termination at the existing Lake Mayer recreational facility. The new pathway would be eight to ten feet wide and approximately 6.0 miles (7.7 kilometers) long. The project would be within the existing property/right of way (ROW) of various county-, and city-owned roads and properties; however, small, narrow sections of required right-of-way and easements may be needed in sections of the project but would not exceed 40 feet in width. The Truman Linear Park Trail Phase II was split into two projects; Phase IIA (PI#0007631) from Lake Mayer to DeRenne Avenue was recently constructed by Chatham County, and Phase IIB (PI#0015306) connects the recently constructed Phase 2A at DeRenne Avenue to previously constructed Phase 1 at 52nd Street near Bee Road and will be constructed by the City of Savannah. The Phase IIB segments of the corridor includes a 3,600-foot long corridor on the west of Reuben Clark Road from DeRenne Avenue north to the Georgia Power easement near 65th Street; a 700-foot long corridor along the Georgia Power easement near 65th Street from Reuben Clark to Truman Parkway; a 4,800 -foot long corridor along the east side of the Truman Parkway from the Georgia Power easement near 65th Street to 52nds Street; a 500-foot long corridor along the southside of 52nd Street from the Truman Parkway to Oakland Drive crossing 52nd Street at Oakland Drive; and a 1,700-foot long corridor along the northside of 52nd street from Oakland Drive to Police Memorial Trail near Bee Road.

This proposed project is an addendum to the Phase I archaeological survey of the proposed Truman Linear Park Trail Phase II Corridor in Chatham County, Georgia (GDOT Project No. CSHPP0007-00(631), PI# 0007631 [Sweeney 2012]) and the Truman Linear Park Trail Phase IIB (PI# 0015306 [Sweeney 2019]). The APE for this current investigation includes three locations of the Phase IIB corridor that falls outside the survey corridor previously covered by Brockington and Associates in 2012 (Sweeney 2012) and 2019 (Sweeney 2019). See Figures 1 and 2 for the three additional survey locations addressed in this addendum.
