Phase I Cultural Resource Assessment Commerce Industrial Building Commerce, Jackson County, Georgia

This report documents results of a cultural resource assessment survey performed by Greenhouse Consultants Incorporated in conjunction with its Paleo\Vest affiliate of approximately 128 acres in Jackson County, Georgia. The Area of Potential Effects (APE) for this survey is situated northwest of Interstate 85, immediately northwest of Tanger Outlets in Commerce, Georgia.

The purpose of this survey was to locate and identify historic properties within the APE and to assess the significance of such properties with respect to the National Register of historic Places (NRHP) criteria in 36 CFR 60, National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, as amended. The survey was completed in accordance with federal and state regulations, and it was undertaken to comply with the Georgia Standards and Guidelines for Archaeological Investigations provided by the Georgia Council of Professional Archaeologists (GCP A 2019).

Shovel test pits (STP) were pre-plotted "within the APE at 30 meter intervals spaced 30 meters apart, with pedestrian survey transects of low probability areas plotted at a spacing of 90 meters. Our field team plotted and excavated a total of 202 STP. No STP were positive for cultural material, and 14 STP were unable to be excavated. Pedestrian survey was conducted along the transects throughout the APE. One newly identified archaeological sites was recorded during survey.

Site 9JK.348 is a newly documented Post-contact artifact scatter located within the APE. Our team documented the resource and recommends that it is not eligible for the NRHP.

This cultural resources assessment survey established that the undertaking should have no adverse effects on sites eligible for the National Register of Historic Places. We, therefore, recommend no additional archaeological investigation within the APE.
