Abstract

This project consists of one bridge on State Route (SR) 255 in Murray County. This bridge was designed using an H-15 vehicle, which is below our current design standards.

The bridge on SR 255 over Sumac Creek, Structure ID 213-0031-0, was built in 1940. The bridge consists of three spans of steel beams on concrete caps with concrete columns. The calculated load carrying capacity is 62.3 percent lower than current standards. There is cracking throughout the deck with efflorescence and spoiling with exposed rebar. The steel beams have areas of corrosion, and the diaphragms have several areas with section loss up to l00 percent. The concrete caps have cracks with efflorescence and the concrete columns have heavy abrasion at the waterline. Due to the condition of the bridge and the load carrying capacity below current standards, replacement of this structure is necessary.

The existing bridge is approximately 123 feet (ft) in length and 47 ft in width. The roadway currently consists of one 11-ft lane in each direction with 0-to-l0-ft shoulders. The existing right-of-way (ROW) is approximately 60-ft wide. At this time, details for the proposed bridge, proposed roadway, and proposed ROW are unknown. Additionally, it is unknown whether an ott-site detour will be needed for the project (Sean Yates and Elizabeth Southard, personal communication, August 2, 2022).
