Abstract

A cultural resources survey was conducted on two parcels of land (Figure 1) in the Oconee National Forest in preparation for a land exchange with the Greensboro Lumber Company, Greensboro, Georgia. The parcels in question are located as follows. Parcel One (Figure 2) comprises all of the Forest Service land within Compartment 197, formerly containing the Greensboro Lake recreation area, now closed, ca. two miles NE of the town of Greensboro. It is situated north of the gravel road and Georgia R.R. right-of-ways across from the Greensboro Lumber Company's lumber yard. Parcel Two (Figure 3) is situated on the Greene-Oconee County line, and Compartment 171, west of Georgia Highway 15. It is also along the northern boundary of the former Redlands District, and is drained by Ellison Creek, a tributary of the Oconee River, which passes a mile to the south. County maintained Black Ike Road and FS 1253-A serve the parcel. The initial field investigations of these parcels were conducted on March 25 and 26, 1980, by the author, assisted by YACC enrollee Mike Aparicio and OA enrollee Clarence Walker. Test excavations of the rock pile found on Parcel One were done by the author and John Barrett, assisted by three YCC enrollees from the Greensboro Work Center, on June 26, 1980.
