A Survey of Archaeological and Historical Resources on an Additional 14.78 Acres at Hurricane Shoals Park, Jackson County, Georgia

This report relates the results of an archaeological survey on an additional 14-78 acres at Hurricane Shoals Park in Jackson County, Georgia (Fig. 1). Hurricane Shoals is located on the North Oconee River approximately seven miles from the city of Jefferson, Georgia. The original park area was slightly over 18 acres in extent. The initial archaeological survey of the park area was conducted by Chung Ho Lee with Paul R. Fish acting as principal investigator (Lee, 1976). The archaeological survey of the newly acquired property was conducted 1) to determine the location of historical and archaeological sites within the area and 2) to evaluate the potential effect of park construction on any cultural remains located by the survey. Lee (1976) has already conducted an extensive search in to the historical literature concerning the Hurricane Shoals area, and parts of this report will summarize his findings. The field survey and site testing of the new Hurricane Shoals property required five days. Laboratory analysis and report preparation required an additional six days. Patricia M.
