Abstract

This report presents the results of a field survey of archaeological and historic site in two proposed construction areas in the Headwaters of the Chattooga Watershed, Chattooga and Walker Counties, Georgia. The two areas surveyed were Structures 1M on Town Creek, near LaFayette in Walker County and the right-of-way of Dikes 1 and 2 in Trion, Chattooga County. The field survey was begun on May 15, 1975 and terminated on May 24, 1975. The laboratory analysis was carried out concurrently with the field phrase and was completed on June 1, 1975.

The survey was funded and this report prepared under the provisions of a contractual agreement between the U. S. Department of Agriculture, Soil Conservation Service and the Department of Sociology and Anthropology, West Georgia College. As outlined in the agreement specifications (see attached copy in Appendix), the contract stipulates the submission of a final report containing the following: 1) the determination, description and map location of all archaeological sites in the two construction areas; 2) an assessment of the potential effect of the proposed construction on the archaeological resources; 3) a suggested program of the measures and estimated costs necessary to adequately mitigate the impact of the construction. on the resources, and 4) the determination of the archaeological and historical levels of significance of the sites for nomination to the National Registry of Historic Places. The site descriptions and analyses, impact assessments, levels of significance and suggested mitigation measures are presented in Part 1 of this report. Part 2, (separate volume), contains the photographs and site location maps.
