Abstract

From August 18 through August 20, 1981, Cultural Resource Services, Inc. conducted a 100 percent coverage cultural resource pedestrian survey of proposed sewerage system improvements in Commerce, Jackson County, Georgia. A review of the site files at the University of Georgia in Athens revealed that no prehistoric or historic resources have been previously recorded within the impact zone. Surface survey and subsurface shovel testing revealed two sites: one prehistoric surface scatter (401-3-1) and an early 20th century occupational structure (401-3-2). Two modern structures (less than 50 years old) were present but not evaluated due to lack of temporal depth. Three isolated finds were also recovered. Based on our findings, CRS recommends full cultural clearance for the proposed sewerage system improvements in Commerce, Georgia. Commerce is located in Jackson County, Georgia, in the northeast portion of the state, 105 kilometers (65 miles) northeast of Atlanta (see Figure 1). The project area consists of 10,683 meters (35,050 feet) of proposed sewer line requiring a 12 meter (40 foot) temporary construction easement and a 6 meter (20 foot) permanent maintenance easement. Approximately 6 acres of a 37.7 acre project tract will be directly impacted by the proposed construction of a sewage treatment plant. Approximately 2819 meters (9,250 feet) of the proposed sewer line will be installed in previously Impacted rights-of-way and developed yards. The remainder will be placed in undeveloped or partially developed areas.
