Abstract

Jekyll Island possesses some twenty-two potential archaeological sites. These are heaps of oyster and other shell called middens. They contain potsherds showing various styles left by historic and prehistoric Indians. The site locations marked on the attached map are scattered over the island especially on the river side of the island where oyster shell beds, fish and shrimp were plentiful.
