Abstract

On July 23, 1982 a cultural resource assessment was conducted on a section of a tract of land in Clay County, Georgia. This tract is identified as Lot 7 in the Gopher Ridge development approximately 8.9 kilometers (5.8 miles) north of the Walter F. George Lock and Dam. The tract is on the east bank of the Walter F. George Lake approximately half-way between the impoundment mouths of Pataula Creek and Sandy Branch. The Universal Transverse Mercator Grid coordinates of the western end of this tract are: Zone 16 / East 680, 660 North 3,SO9,300. The western end of this tract and directly adjacent Corps property, which is the specific area of concern in this cultural resource assessment, is approximately at an elevation of 197 feet (60 meters) above mean sea level and extends for one hundred feet (30 meters) along the shore line. An environmental, archeological, and historical background survey was conducted for the tract and the surrounding vicinity. It was noted that this tract is located at some distance from original fresh water sources. It was also noted that there are no recorded archeological or historical re- of significance in the immediate vicinity of the tract. The nearest structure of historical significance is the Standley Home which was moved from some distance away to a spot approximately I kilometer (.7 miles) north of the tract during the construction of the Walter F. George Lock and Dam in the early 1960's. The section to be impacted was examined by conducting a surface reconnaissance, and examination of the eroding bank of the lake, and two profiles were excavated in this bank. No cultural resources of significance were discovered and no mitigative action is recommended.
