Abstract

Southeastern Archeological Services, Inc. contracted with Oglethorpe Power Corporation to conduct a cultural resources survey of the route of a proposed 13.3 km (8.25 mile) electrical transmission line and substation in Twiggs County, Georgia. The survey located six sites, three of which were prehistoric sites that appear to meet the criteria of eligibility for listing in the National Register of Historic Places. Largely because the project impact zone follows existing road right-of-ways, the proposed construction will have no adverse impact on these sites. The transmission line traverses the southern portion of the Wimberly Plantation Historic Property, but subsurface testing, visual inspection and documentary research has determined that no adverse impact to the integrity of the property will occur. It is the recommendation of the principal investigator that the proposed construction of the transmission line and substation be given clearance to proceed.
